inDespite the nagging suspicion of a resemblance to Baron Münchhausen the memoirs of Achaz von Bismarck were quite fascinating. There was only a brief mention of the more famous Bismarck, but they were related, 2nd cousins or something similar.
He appears to have met nearly all of the famous names of the time; he danced with Königin Luise, he attempted to join the Schillsche Freikorps in 1809, (but they’d moved on) he was best friends with von Lützow, served with him in the 1. Garde Regiment, and later in the famous Lützowsche Freikorps.
Personally he probably wasn’t the perfect Prussian officer, he was often in prison, mostly it seems for gambling related offences, gave away his ancestral land for next to nothing and served briefly in the Regiment Preußen for the French. Eventually he sailed to South America in 1820 to join the forces of Bolivar in Venezuela, which again never quite worked out.
He returned to Prussia penniless, hence the writing of his memoirs to earn some money, but it was certainly an interesting life. True or not…
My favourite anecdote however is a ghost story, almost (page 73):

A nice purchase this week from Abe Books, all five volumes of Treitschke‘s Deutsche Geschichte, all by the same publisher but with different dates (1879-1894) and slightly different bindings, for the not so princely sum of 30 Euros. I’m aware that the man had some curious ideas but I’d like to determine the extent of the curiousness for myself.
As an added bonus inside one of the volumes (why did I not note the volume and page!) was a poem about the Benedettistein monument in Bad Ems, erected in memory of the famous incident that precipitated the Franco-Prussian war and brought about the unification of Germany. So, for posterity…

Johann Kühnau, Lieutenant in the Landwehr, fell in the battle of Hagelsberg, bei Lübnitz, on the 27th August 1813, just one of many civilians who joined up to drive the French (and others) from their homeland. According to v. d. Marwitz (Nachlasse, Band. 2 S. 84):
I like the little obscure connections. Kühnau was a teacher at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium, where Otto von Bismarck, whose uncle also took part in the battle at Hagelsberg, was later educated. It was a small world. Perhaps both of them handled the book I now possess.

I’ve just noticed that my 1794 copy of Campe’s Kinder Bibliothek has a library stamp from “Königl. Friedrich Wilhelms Gymnas.” which I presume is the Friedrich Wilhelms Gymnasium in Berlin (although it could be one of several others), once on the corner of Kochstraße and Friedrichstraße, sadly no longer extant.
I see that Bismarck was a pupil there, perhaps he read the same book?

Today is the anniversary of the Emser Depesche incident, which led sofort to the Franco-Prussian War. The blame attached to Bismarck by most historians seems a little overdone to me, in line with general prussiabashing, but I’m no expert. If indeed the Prussians did provoke France into war it was a lesson well learnt by France/England/Russia in 1914, some would say.

I found a not particularly flattering reference to “Der Tag ist angebrochen!” by Rudolph Dulon in “Briefwechsel des Generals Leopold von Gerlach mit dem Bundestags-Gesandten Otto von Bismarck” (20th May 1852).
Upon reading it, not only can I see why they were unimpressed, but also that Mencius Moldbug may have a point…
From Chapter 3, “Der Tag der Erkenntnis”:
See, you can’t argue with Democracy, it’s the will of God.

6th September 1849.
(Lebhaftes Bravo!)

inI thought I’d add this here as I was looking for a quote to submit for possible inclusion into a book about the alte deutsche Schrift and liked this, but couldn’t find an exact attribution anywhere, so found it in my own copy of ‘Fürst Bismarcks Briefe an seine Braut und Gattin‘. Eventually.
