A couple of small excerpts, both relating to Marwitz‘s opinion of the effect of the Hardenberg reforms on Prussian society (Seiten 382 & 386).

Now the usurers are in all our houses, every time you look at the TV, and barely a sign of Abscheu to be seen.

Reminiscent of the poseurs in my local, insisting on wines that they clearly can’t pronounce paid for by endless credit. Also “Fuchs Eier und Schaumwein” is a nice phrase, roasted almonds?

Once again, Marwitz may have had a point.

Monbijouplatz and Modernity

Well here I am in a hotel on Monbijouplatz on the 18th März, I knew the Schloß was no longer here but a plaque might have been nice. Same for In den Zelten; no sign it ever existed. I’m a little disappointed in the modern Germans, I know they want to forget the 1930’s but forgetting the 18th and 19th centuries seems like babies and bathwater (a German saying according to Carlyle I believe).

On the upside, I’m writing this in the pub after eating Königsberger Klopse.

*Edit: I may have been a little hasty, there is at least an information board…

I should have posted this yesterday, but events overtook me.

Stuhm

Yesterday (Thursday) I was investigating the West Prussian town from which my German friend’s Father originated, a place called Stuhm, now in Poland.  An interesting little place, and the Wikipedia link to an old Topography of Prussia provided a quaint sounding description of the area from 1789, with the small village dominated by an old castle and surrounded by two large lakes.

The last paragraph however tells the curious story of a tradition of banning the lighting of fires on a particular day of the year, because the town had previously burnt down three separate times on the same day.  That day was the Thursday before Pfingsten (Whitsun), the day I read the article.

I think that’s curious anyway, but so are lots of things.
